TB1-Dominion and the incorporation of care in Architecture
Lecture 1:Dominion
- In the bible it is said that humans in other words have dominance over all things
- Everything around us is designed to service us
- Aboriginal people held a symbolic relationship with their environment - didn't seek to conquer the environment but to live empethetically within it, they also believe the earth hold mythical and spiritual qualities
- The industrial revolution transformed the world forever however the consequences were significant:
- Mass production - Employment
- Pollution/waste - Greater need for raw materials - Change in social order
- Industrialisation and globalisation has had the consequences of drastically raising levels of pollution, waste, diminished air quality, climate change. Dominion is at the centre of this crisis as us humans exploit the earth and seem to think that everything is here for us to use. To make change we need to reflect upon the consequences of climate change and recalibrate this concept of dominion.
Lecture 2: Act of care in Architecture
Sevre Fehn School for deaf children - Oslo,Norway
- He understood the needs of the people he served and spent a long time trying to understand the needs of deaf children before putting pen to paper and realised the importance of visual contact for the children, this lead him to design in a particular way.
- Incorporation of semicircular elements for the teaching spaces as they needed to see the mouths of the teachers when they spoke as they relied on their eyes, so that the children sit In a semicircle to make it easier to read their teachers lips. This demonstrates wisdom and a real attitude of care.
Maggie Centre UK - charitable trust organisation set up by the Architect and critic Charles Jenks in memory of his late wife Maggie Jenks who died of cancer
- Facilities were built in a number of locations across the UK where each centre is designed by a renowned and eminent architect
- They're designed to be places of support and respite for those people with cancer as well as their families that are equally effected
Care in material use
- Each material we use has its own ecology and also interconnected ecologies. Tress for example are living entities that have diverse ecologies: wildlife habitats, deciduous leaves, compost supporting, insects, carbon capture, photosynthesis. These are some of the most valuable resources the planet have - a material source which is not finite and can be harvested and replaced.
- Concrete that comprises of sand and aggravate, this is an excellent building material as its dense and durable therefore has a high thermal mass.
Care as Economy - The king housing, Denmark - project designed by Yontan
- This project was to house shipyard workers in health housing and design to their needs. The location of the housing was based in tranquil landscape where the nature surrounded the housing.
Care as Ethics - please think about these questions and ask yourself what you really think
- What are your values?
- How do they inform your 'everyday'?
- How do they inform your practice?
