Lecture 2 - Making place around the world: How different places & cultures make place around the world
3 fundamental conditions for making place: Retreat, Prospect, Reason - universal equality
-Pergolas, south France - locals provide shading for themselves and others which characterises the nature of places in these kind of climates.
-Traditional Aboriginal shelter - built on stilts to encourage ventilation and the use of local found materials , they also have long roof overhangs for solar shading.
-The forbidden city in Beijing,China - Large roof hangs that provide shelter - inspiration for the design of the Sydney opera house by John Utzon and the inspired by the idea of platforms in ancient cultures.
-Alhambra Palace represents a transcultural architecture, this is where one cultures architecture is taken to another place - manifestation of North African architecture in Southern Spain.
